Can I buy a book from Amzon's Kindle Store and then put it in iPad's iBooks?
I really hate the Kinde app for iPad but love the supremely huge catalogue of books available from Amazon. Is there a way to convert the books that I can buy to epub format (which I think is the only format for iPad)?

No, sorry. Kindle books can only be read on the Kindle app.
For reading purpose, you should definitely go for the Kindle. I’ve given a detailed comparison between the iPad and the Kindle, in a previous answer here. Guess you’ll be interested:

And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:

No. Kindle uses DRM, which is illegal to remove.
Sorry, you cannot make Kindle books into iBook. They are different format, and Kindle books are protected by DRM.
And for reading use, I think you should definitely go for the Kindle instead of iPad. The iBookStore of iPad is too unmature at this moment. And there has been many users complaining that if you look into the screen of iPad for reading over an hour, your eyes will get very tired because of the backlight. See an article about this here:

There are two models of the Kindle. Here are some good comparisons between the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX. Guess they will help you decide which is more suitable to you:

Hope this helps your decision.
You can only read Kindle books through Kindle app on the iPad…
There is some issue for screen of iPad when you use it for reading. See here and you’ll know:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Ftagging%2Ftag%2Fkindle%2Fforum%3Fie%3DUTF8%26cdForum%3DFx1D7SY3BVSESG%26ref_%3Dcm%5Fcd%5Fef%5Ftft%5Ftp%26cdThread%3DTx164P1YL79AI6U&tag=querystr-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And it is always the best to read some actual user opinions. Here are some very good user opinions about the iPad compared to the Kindle:
